Seattle

I grew up in Illinois, but when I decided to move out west, my family followed me. I chose the desert, they chose the gray skies and rain. And I love it.

I make sure to visit this beautiful city whenever I get the chance. It’s full of intentional green spaces, beautiful seascapes, and amazingly talented innovators like Bill Gates, Howard Shultz and Jeff Bezos.

It’s hard not to be inspired when you’re here.

“I believe you have to be willing to be misunderstood if you’re going to innovate.”

– Jeff Bezos

Ireland

Ireland has to be my favorite country – everything is green and beautiful and the locals are the friendliest people you will ever meet. My wife and I were made to feel like we were at home no matter where we went.

Including these beautiful cliffs:

We stayed in Dublin, but rented a car one day to drive across the country so we could visit Galway and see the Cliffs of Moher. Learning to drive a manual transmission with my left hand was easier than expected, but keeping my eyes on the road and off the scenery was definitely a challenge.

Here are some of my favorite photos from the trip:

London

To celebrate five years of marriage, my wife and I set off on a trip to explore the UK and Ireland.

Here are a few of my favorite photos from around London and the UK:

Africa

In 2011, my wife and I took an unforgettable trip to Nairobi, Kenya. We met some amazing people and took in awe-inspiring views.  I revisited some of my favorite photos recently and updated some of the edits. None of these photos can ever truly capture the beauty of Africa, but I hope you enjoy them anyway.

PHX FAVS

At the beginning of this year, I rented an expensive van and took a one-way road trip to Washington, D.C. – my new home. In the past five years, I’ve made two cross-country moves. First from Illinois to Arizona and now from Arizona to D.C.

I was in Phoenix for over three years. I had great opportunities, bought a home, met lifelong friends, and fell in love with the desert. I don’t know when I’ll be back, but in the meantime I put together a few of my favorite photos from America’s greatest state.

Senior In-Law

Nothing makes you feel older than seeing your little sister (in-law) get ready to begin her college career. I’m closer to my 10-year high school reunion than she is to her sophomore year. It’s just crazy.

But every single time a loved one or close friend begins the ceremonial preparations for college, we begin to think about our own lives. Our own careers. I love graduation time because it means the internet gets flooded with commencement speeches. Some unbearably awful, and some that everybody should listen to. Best part: you don’t have to wear that stupid cap and gown.

It's about the real value of a real education,
which has almost nothing to do with knowledge and
everything to do with simple awareness.

Sophia has been an excellent high school student and she’ll be an even better college kid. But I want to take this opportunity to share one of my favorite commencement speeches. It’s a bit cliché…just not quite as bad as “Oh, the Places You’ll Go.”

It’s easy to forget that life isn’t just sequential. It’s not just high school, college, career, family, death. There are thousands of moments between the milestones, and we need to be reminded to stop and appreciate them (me especially).

“If you’re automatically sure that you know what reality is, and who and what is really important, if you want to operate on your default setting then you – like me – probably won’t consider possibilities that aren’t annoying and miserable. But if you’ve really learned how to think, how to pay attention, then you’ll know you have other options.”

Check out the video below, share it, and congratulate a grad in your life.

Australia

A friend who I have known since childhood was recently accepted into a medical school program in Brisbane. The 18 hour time difference made it difficult for us to catch up, but we often made the effort anyway. One day he suggested my wife and I come visit.

And we took him up on his offer in a heartbeat.

We spent nearly two weeks in Australia, visiting Sydney, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Lady Elliot Island, and the Sunshine Coast.

It is the most beautiful country I have ever visited – pristine beaches, friendly locals, and absolutely fascinating wildlife. I’m counting down the days until we can go back and explore more of the Land Down Under.

Almost Silhouettes

Sometimes you plan the perfect photo shoot for weeks, months, or even years. Meticulously scouting the right location, cleverly positioning your subject to make sure your angle is just right. Other times you take your dog for a walk and just stumble upon something beautiful.

As dumb luck would have it, that’s exactly where this series started. I found a wall and ran with it – asking my wife, all of my friends, and the occasional stranger to strike an interesting pose. Below are a few of my favorites:

Antelope Canyon

Sometimes the best nature has to offer is right in your own backyard.

Well…in this case, it was about four hours from my backyard.

BUT JUST LOOK AT THIS:

I’ve never seen anything like Antelope Canyon – I could have spent hours wandering around this beautiful work of art. I don’t have anything more to say, just look and see how beautiful this place is:

Not convinced? Below are a few more of my favorite photos – but nothing compares to the real thing. Just book your trip already.

Grand Avenue Pizza

One of my favorite content marketing campaigns happens to be when I worked with my favorite pizza place in Phoenix.

After I spoke with the owner and asked him to describe his pizza, he said he couldn’t really put a word to it. It’s nothing like Chicago style, bears some similarities to New York style, but overall there is really nothing like it.

That’s when we realized Grand Avenue Pizza Company isn’t like the others – they serve #PhoenixStyle pizza. The locals in Phoenix come from all over the nation, just like the culinary inspiration for Grand Avenue’s pizza.

We spent two days traveling to unique locations across Phoenix to showcase this delicious pizza and highlight everything that makes it unique.
